Why Mosaik exists

Most of us now juggle a chat app, an image tool, a research assistant, a document editor and a coding agent, each in its own window with its own idea of how the model should behave. Mosaik is one fast, deeply customisable workspace that does all of it, sharing one history and one set of models.

Two problems with mainstream chat apps drove the design:

• You can't control how the AI works. The system prompt, temperature, model and limits are hidden or fixed. In Mosaik they are first-class, set for the app and overridden per chat and per project.
• A side question derails the main task. A new chat loses the context; replying in the same thread pollutes it. Mosaik's answer is quick-ask: a popover beside the chat that knows the conversation but never joins it.

The name

A mosaic is a picture made of many small pieces. A quick question, a project's brief, an afternoon of code: every piece of the work, set into one picture. In the app, each project carries a small mosaic of its own, whose tiles are set in colour as its tasks get done.

The interface is neutral, graphite in the dark and white in the light, with a single amber accent spent on interaction alone. The mosaic colours (navy, oxblood, teal, gold and amber) belong to the brand: the tiled-spark logo, the picture on the New Chat page, and the small tiles that tag each kind of work. It is set in Inter, with Fraunces for headings.

What we believe

• Local-first. Conversations, projects and settings stay on your machine.
• Bring your own model. Through OpenRouter, you are never locked to one vendor.
• Nothing destructive without consent, and nothing without a way back. Code edits are checkpointed, risky commands ask first, and the assistant's changes to a project are proposals that wait for you.
• Calm, fast, legible. Streaming feedback, compact summaries, no modal noise.

Where it came from

Mosaik started life as OpenRouter Chat, a desktop client for OpenRouter. As projects, a coding agent, and Writing, Research and Art arrived, it outgrew the name. Anyone coming from OpenRouter Chat keeps everything: the first launch copies it all across and leaves the original untouched.
